Deep Clean Your Spleen
Pre-Order the new album by Antsy McClain and The Perpetrators of Love
Made in a bubble of time travel and existential escape, “Deep Clean Your Spleen” is a labor of love and an homage to the Disco and Funk music of the 1970’s.
“I called up my friends,” says Antsy, “And asked them if they wanted to make a disco album with me. Each one answered with an emphatic Yes! And we were off to the races.”
Chris “Spoons” Long, Tim “T-Bone” Thompson and Michael “Too Cool for a Nickname” (or “Too Cool” as we now call him), Majett joined Antsy in the studio with long-time engineer/collaborator Marv Treutel, and made music they are all proudly calling, “the most fun I’ve ever had in a studio.”
“I had all these different songs,” recalls Antsy, “You know, written in my usual framework: four chords with an Americana, folkabilly bounce, and I told the guys, ‘Ignore all that, and put this song in 1978, New York, Studio 54.’ And they did! It was amazing to watch. Michael and Spoons worked up a rhythm section and Tim can play anything, and he has all the pedals. Marv added vintage effects. We just had a ball.”
After cutting a few songs,” says Antsy, “I realized I couldn’t release this band as The Trailer Park Troubadours, even though they’ve been on my previous albums as such. So I came up with The Perpetrators of Love, which has a weird dichotomy to it, like it may not necessarily be a good thing. (Laughs) Since the word ‘perpetrator’ is typically associated with committing a crime, you know, so the juxtaposition works for me.”
“When we were done,” Antsy recalls, “No one wanted to leave. Tim even asked me, ‘Do you have any more songs like this?’ (Laughs) I answered, Not really, but I’ll be writing more now!’ So there may just be a follow up. I’ve since written another dozen songs, and more than a few could totally fit into this genre.”
